The Housekeeper Who Remembered

Chapter 08 - The Housekeeper Who Remembered

Only three people knew where Owen had hidden the suitcase.

Owen, Gabriel, and Nora.

The security system showed no forced entry. Someone used an old staff code disabled years earlier.

Owen contacted June Holloway, the housekeeper who had worked for the family during his childhood. Victor dismissed her after Malcolm’s death.

June lived in a small town near the coast. She opened the door, saw Gabriel, and struck him across the face.

Then she hugged him.

“I waited nineteen years to do both.”

June admitted she had kept an active service code because Evelyn asked her never to surrender all access to the house. But she had not taken the suitcase.

She knew who had.

Dean Morrow learned the old codes while overseeing renovations. He also controlled the camera maintenance company.

June told them about the night of the crash.

Victor arrived at Vale House before dawn with wet clothes and blood on one cuff. Malcolm ordered June to prepare a guest room, but no guest entered through the front door.

From the service corridor, June heard a woman crying.

“I looked through the pantry hatch,” she said. “Evelyn was on a stretcher. She was alive.”

Gabriel gripped the edge of the table.

“Why didn’t you tell police?”

“Malcolm showed me a photograph of Owen sleeping. He said accidents happen to children when adults create confusion.”

Owen turned away.

June had lived with that threat for nineteen years.

She also knew where Victor would take the suitcase.

Malcolm kept a private archive beneath the original Vale factory. The room contained documents too dangerous to destroy and too valuable to release. Victor inherited the key.

They entered the factory after midnight through an abandoned loading tunnel.

The archive door stood open.

Inside, shelves had been cleared. The suitcase lay on a metal table, cut apart.

Its leather lining had been removed.

Dean had searched it for something Gabriel did not know existed.

June picked up one brass corner.

It rattled.

A technician loosened the screws.

Inside was a narrow key and a strip of paper bearing a Swiss bank box number.

Evelyn had built a hiding place inside the suitcase itself.

Dean had destroyed the baggage and missed the one compartment designed to survive him.
