What Evelyn Packed

Chapter 03 - What Evelyn Packed

Gabriel sat on the floor because Owen refused to offer him a chair.

He rested both hands on the suitcase.

“The night before the crash, your mother called me from the old train station. She said she had proof Victor and Malcolm were stealing from the Vale pension fund. She had packed documents, recordings, and enough clothes for you to leave with us.”

Owen’s jaw tightened. “You expect me to believe my grandfather was a thief?”

“I expect you to examine evidence.”

Gabriel explained that Evelyn never reached their meeting place. Her car went through the bridge rail shortly after midnight. Gabriel arrived at the crash site before police and saw a company security vehicle leaving the access road.

He found the suitcase hidden inside a station locker using a key Evelyn had mailed to him earlier.

Before he could go to the police, men employed by Vale Security took him.

“They said you would die if I spoke.”

“Where were you?”

“Places chosen because no one would ask whether Gabriel Vale belonged there.”

Gabriel had been moved through private facilities under false names. Forged warrants described him as an international fraud suspect. For years he had no lawyer, no passport, and no proof of identity. When one facility closed after a human-rights investigation, he escaped during the transfer.

Owen laughed bitterly.

“That sounds convenient.”

“It sounds impossible because powerful people survive by making the truth sound badly written.”

Gabriel unlocked the suitcase.

Inside lay a folded blue scarf, a silver cassette recorder, three notebooks, a child’s red mitten, and a sealed envelope bearing Owen’s name.

He stared at the mitten.

A memory returned: snow against a car window, his mother pulling red wool over his fingers, one mitten falling beneath the seat.

Gabriel handed him the envelope.

The paper smelled faintly of dust and orange soap.

Owen broke the seal.

My dearest Little North,

If you are reading this, someone finally chose truth over fear. Your father did not hurt me. The danger comes from inside our family, and it wears kindness better than anger.

Owen stopped.

The final line had been underlined twice.

Do not sign away your shares until you hear the recording marked Blackwater.

Victor had scheduled the merger signing on the nineteenth anniversary of the crash.

Owen looked at Gabriel.

“Why wait until today?”

“Because Victor found out I was alive last week.”

“How?”

Gabriel touched the scar above his eye.

“The man who kept me hidden has been following me since Montreal.”

A shadow moved beyond the rain-streaked glass.

Someone was standing at the edge of the lawn.
