The board moved the merger vote to Vale International’s centennial gala.

Victor believed ceremony would create momentum. Two thousand guests gathered beneath gold banners celebrating a century of “integrity, courage, and family stewardship.”

Owen entered carrying the remains of Evelyn’s suitcase.

Its leather had been cut, the lining torn, and one brass corner removed. He placed it on the stage beside the merger documents.

Board members murmured.

Victor appeared by live video on the main screen.

Nora displayed the filed amendment from the Swiss box.

Victor’s votes disappeared.

The merger failed.

Applause began in the rear of the ballroom among retired workers invited as decoration. It spread forward until executives realized the room had chosen a side.

Victor cut the video.
