Chapter 16 - The Trial of the Vale Story
Victor’s trial lasted five months.
Prosecutors presented the Blackwater recordings, Dean’s testimony, the Swiss ledgers, Malcolm’s letter, the west-wing medical logs, and records from Gabriel’s illegal detention.
Victor’s defense argued that Malcolm directed the early cover-up and that doctors—not Victor—made Evelyn’s treatment decisions.
Evelyn testified for two days.
She described being pulled from the river, waking inside Vale House, and hearing Malcolm say that Owen needed a stable story more than a living mother.
She described the clinics, the false name, and the years when medication made time impossible to measure.
Victor’s attorney asked whether her memory could be trusted.
Evelyn opened her diary.
“I wrote the same names before, during, and after every medication change. Memory can be attacked. Patterns are harder to drug.”
Gabriel testified next.
He admitted attempting escape from detention and attacking guards who restrained him. He did not pretend captivity made him perfect.
“The records call me violent,” he said. “They do not record what the men were doing when I fought them.”
Owen testified last.
Victor’s attorney showed photographs of Victor attending Owen’s graduations and sitting beside him in the hospital after childhood surgery.
“This man raised you, did he not?”
“Yes.”
“And you loved him?”
“Yes.”
The courtroom quieted.
“Then why should the jury believe he is a monster?”
Owen looked at Victor.
“Because love does not make evidence disappear. It only explains why evidence hurts.”
The jury convicted Victor of conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, obstruction, unlawful confinement, and attempted destruction of evidence.
Dean received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
Several doctors and executives were charged separately.
Malcolm could not face trial.
His bronze statue outside headquarters was removed after employees voted.
Owen refused to melt it down.
