Chapter 07 - The Signature Waiting Downstairs

Victor moved quickly.

He announced that the merger would proceed under an emergency proxy provision. If Owen did not sign, the board could vote to dilute his shares and remove him from the trust.

The vote was scheduled in seventy-two hours.

Owen’s advisers urged compromise. Vale International employed forty thousand people. Public scandal had already dropped the stock price. They warned that exposing Malcolm’s crimes could destroy pensions a second time.

It was the same argument on the tape: protect the institution by protecting the lie.

Owen refused.

Victor then released a statement claiming Gabriel had manipulated Evelyn, stolen the recordings, and returned to extort the family.

A laboratory hired by Vale International challenged the tapes, suggesting they had been edited.

Nora found an independent audio expert who verified the age and continuity.

The company attacked the expert.

Meanwhile, Gabriel and Owen traveled to Montreal to meet the investigator who helped restore Gabriel’s identity. She produced records showing Dean Morrow had visited the private detention facility four times during Gabriel’s confinement.

Each visit was paid through Horizon East.

Gabriel explained why he had not returned immediately after escaping.

“I had no evidence and no legal name. If I came to you, Victor would call me insane or dangerous. I watched you from a distance until I knew whether you had become him.”

Owen stopped walking.

“And what did you decide?”

“That you had learned some of his habits.”

The answer hurt because it was true.

Owen had fired employees in public, ignored pension complaints, and allowed Victor to define strength as the absence of doubt.

“Why come now?”

Gabriel looked toward the river.

“Because you were about to sign. And because I found proof Evelyn was moved after St. Arden.”

He removed a photograph from his coat.

It showed a woman entering a clinic vehicle in Geneva eight years earlier. Her face was partly turned away, but a crescent-shaped birthmark appeared near her left ear.

Owen knew it from childhood.

Before they could discuss it further, Nora called.

Someone had broken into Vale House.

The suitcase was gone.
