The Apartment Door

Chapter 15 - The Apartment Door

Naomi kept the damaged apartment door for nearly a year.

The lock had been replaced, but scratches from Ethan’s tool remained near the frame.

Lily touched them whenever they entered.

Naomi eventually moved to a smaller apartment in a building without trust ownership.

She wanted to pay rent to an unrelated landlord and experience housing that did not carry family history.

Friends questioned why someone with immense wealth rented.

Because ownership had become too emotionally loud.

The old apartment entered the restitution portfolio and was leased below market rate.

Naomi removed the damaged door before the new tenant arrived.

She considered placing it in the archive.

Instead, she destroyed it.

Not every object needed preservation.

Some evidence had already done its work.

At the new apartment, Naomi installed a camera and strong locks, then worried she was repeating fear. Her therapist helped distinguish preparedness from constant surveillance.

The camera faced only the hallway.

No interior monitoring.

Lily received a bedroom without hidden devices.

Naomi dated no one for two years.

When she eventually met Daniel Brooks, a public-school architect, she told him early that she managed significant wealth but not the exact amount.

He did not ask.

Months later, she disclosed the structure fully.

Not as a test.

As intimacy.

Daniel took time to understand what shared finances would mean and insisted on independent legal advice for both of them.

Naomi found the caution more romantic than promises.
