The Morning Lily Asked About the Card

Chapter 18 - The Morning Lily Asked About the Card
At ten, Lily found the jewelry-store video online.
A classmate had sent it.
She watched Naomi cut the black card while carrying her as a toddler.
At dinner, she placed the phone on the table.
“Was Grandma Lenora poor after that?”
“No.”
“People say you took everything.”
“I stopped access to things she did not own.”
“Did Dad break in because he needed money?”
“He wanted the trust key.”
“Did you know he would?”
“No.”
Lily watched the video again.
“You look powerful.”
Naomi considered the word.
“I had power.”
“Did it feel good?”
“For a few seconds, it felt clear.”
“And after?”
“Complicated.”
Lily asked whether she could see the original card.
It belonged to the archive exhibit.
They visited together.
The two black halves sat beneath glass.
Nearby were the fake access order, Project Lily documents, and the trust reforms.
Lily read her own name across the fraud file.
She became quiet.
Naomi waited.
“I was a baby.”
“Yes.”
“They used me because I couldn’t say no.”
“Yes.”
Lily looked at the card.
“Then the important thing isn’t that it stopped.”
“What is?”
“That people have to ask now.”

Naomi smiled.
Her daughter understood the reform better than most bankers.
