Ethan left prison after serving eight years.
He moved into supervised housing and worked for a nonprofit warehouse under strict financial restrictions.
His professional licenses were gone.
He requested to meet Naomi once, without Lily.
She agreed in a public mediation room.
He looked older and less polished.
“I used to think losing the company was the punishment,” he said.
“What changed?”
“I watched Lily grow through reports I was not entitled to receive unless she agreed.”
Naomi waited.
“I thought fatherhood meant permanent access.”
“Yes.”
“I thought marriage meant access too.”
“Yes.”
He did not ask whether she had forgiven him.
He asked whether Lily might someday choose an in-person meeting.
“That is hers.”
“I know.”
The answer sounded different from when lawyers first forced him to say it.
Ethan returned a small item confiscated during arrest and later released from evidence.
Naomi’s silver apartment key from the old marriage.
“I kept it after moving out,” he said. “I told myself it meant I still belonged there.”
Naomi did not take it.
“Dispose of it.”
He nodded.
Outside the building, Ethan placed the key in a metal recycling container.
