From prison, Ethan wrote to Lily once a month.
The first letters described memories.
Her first laugh.
The blue blanket she refused to sleep without.
The time she threw peas at Lenora.
The later letters began naming responsibility.
I used your account because I believed being your father gave me permission.
It did not.
Naomi stored the letters sealed.
When Lily turned seven, she asked why her father did not live with them.
Naomi explained in age-appropriate language.
“He took money that belonged to you and tried to enter our home after I said no.”
“Did he want to hurt me?”
“I don’t know what he felt. I know what he did was unsafe.”
“Does he love me?”
“He says he does.”
“Do you believe him?”
Naomi paused.
“I believe love is not enough by itself.”
Lily chose to read one letter with a therapist present.
She liked the story about peas.
She did not want another letter for six months.
Ethan accepted the boundary through his counselor.
Later, supervised contact resumed by audio only. Lily ended the first call after four minutes.
No adult made her continue.
Ethan learned that fatherhood after harm would be measured through respect for limits, not intensity of regret.
Naomi did not promise reunion.
