The Price of an Unedited Truth

Chapter 11 - The Price of an Unedited Truth

The Geneva operation failed before the hammer fell.

Someone warned the auction house.

Lights came on. Buyers scattered through private exits. The Solstice diamond vanished from its display chamber, and the seller’s server wiped itself.

Sloane escaped with investigators, but Conrad’s media network released footage of her entering the illegal auction. Headlines claimed she and Helena were laundering the stolen necklace together.

The clip excluded police escorts and the secured transmitter.

Public opinion reversed again.

Helena’s advisers urged her to release selective evidence proving cooperation.

She refused.

“Selective truth created this.”

Detective Chen allowed a delayed publication of the full operation after it no longer endangered arrests. Sloane streamed the entire ninety-three-minute recording without commentary.

Viewers saw waiting, confusion, legal instructions, fear, and the failed seizure. It was less exciting than the edited accusation.

It was also complete.

Millions stopped watching before the end.

That became the lesson.

Truth could be available and still lose to entertainment.

Helena convened employees across the company. She admitted the investigation might last years and that the sale would not rescue them. Stores could close. Bonuses would disappear. Executive assets would be used first.

A sales associate asked whether Helena would remain chief executive.

“I am suspended.”

“Will you come back?”

“Only if the new board elects me after the audit.”

The answer unsettled directors who expected her to reclaim the throne once Conrad fell.

Marisol proposed something stronger: transfer daily inventory authority to dual employee-customer oversight, publish insurance claims, and require independent custody for legacy pieces.

Elias supported her.

Helena did not speak first.

For once, the founder’s family listened.

That night, Mirror Three sent another alert.

The Sterling House boutique was closed and empty.

On the black-and-white feed, a man entered through the service corridor using Conrad’s master credential.

Darren Pike had returned.

He carried the missing yellow diamond in a padded case.
