Helena had been twenty-eight when Nora Mercer was accused.
She remembered the blue sapphire bracelet, the locked vault, and her mother recovering from surgery while Conrad managed daily operations. Nora was head gemologist and one of the few employees who challenged executives openly.
Security footage showed Nora entering the vault.
The bracelet disappeared.
Darren Pike, then a junior investigator, found a loose stone inside Nora’s coat pocket.
Helena signed the termination report because Conrad told her the evidence was conclusive and delay would expose the company to scandal. Nora begged for an independent review.
Helena refused.
The document returned fifteen years later like a mirror she could not turn away from.
Reporters surrounded the hotel where she stayed after suspension.
“Did you frame Sloane’s mother?”
“Did you destroy an innocent woman?”
“Was the livestream revenge?”
Her attorney advised silence.
Helena walked to the microphones.
“I signed that report,” she said. “I believed evidence presented by people I trusted. I did not ask who controlled the camera, the pocket, or the investigation. Nora Mercer asked for more time, and I chose speed over fairness.”
The statement shocked her legal team.
“I do not yet know whether Nora was framed. I know I failed to make certain she was not.”
The company’s stock fell again.
Supporters complained that Helena had handed Conrad a weapon. Employees who once praised her ethics asked why accountability arrived only when she became the accused.
Marisol watched the statement from the boutique stockroom.
“She told the truth,” a young sales clerk said.
“She told part of it,” Marisol replied. “Truth arrives in pieces when people have spent years living around it.”
Detective Chen reopened Nora’s case.
The original sapphire bracelet had been recovered through insurance and supposedly melted after damage. No destruction certificate existed. The loose stone found in Nora’s coat did not match the bracelet’s documented cut.
Darren had signed the evidence chain.
Sloane requested another interview.
She admitted receiving the termination report from an encrypted account called The Witness. The sender provided bank records showing Helena’s signature and photographs of Nora leaving the company in tears.
The Witness then offered Sloane exclusive proof that Helena had begun stealing company assets before the sale.
“What did they ask you to do?” Chen said.
“Livestream the confrontation.”
“And plant the replica?”
Sloane lowered her eyes.
“They said Helena had already hidden the real necklace. I was supposed to put the replica back where she moved it, then pull it out on camera.”
“You believed that?”
“I wanted to.”
That answer was more honest than innocence.
