Chapter 08 - The Empty Shelters
The Solstice auction was supposed to fund twelve emergency shelters.
Only three existed.
Ward & Vale had transferred forty million dollars to Aster Foundation over five years. Aster published photographs of furnished rooms, smiling families, and ribbon cuttings. Investigators visited the listed addresses.
One was an empty field.
One was a storage facility.
Four belonged to unrelated apartment buildings.
The charity had used staged photographs and temporary rentals to create proof of impact. The missing money flowed through consulting contracts to Arden Luxe and Conrad’s investment company.
Helena visited the one functioning shelter without press.
Its director, Camille Brooks, recognized the Ward & Vale name and refused to shake her hand.
“We received six months of funding,” Camille said. “Then your foundation used us in advertisements for four years.”
Helena walked through rooms with broken heaters and donated furniture repaired with tape. A mother named Jada explained that residents had watched Sloane’s livestream together.
“At first we thought you stole the necklace,” Jada said.
“And now?”
“Now I think rich people built a machine where everyone gets paid except the people in the picture.”
The sentence followed Helena back to the boardroom.
Conrad continued denying involvement. He blamed rogue employees and argued the sale to Arden Luxe was necessary to restore funding.
Helena placed shelter photographs beside the transaction records.
“You were selling the company to the same group receiving stolen charity money.”
“You are simplifying international finance.”
“I am describing it in the language of the people who did not receive heat.”
The remaining directors authorized an independent receiver.
Conrad’s control weakened, but he still held enough shares to block removal.
Elias Vale returned from Switzerland the next morning.
At seventy-nine, he walked with a silver cane and wore the same dark suit he had worn at Evelyn Ward’s funeral. He asked to meet Helena, Marisol, and Sloane together.
Sloane refused at first.
Then Elias placed Nora Mercer’s original employment file on the table.
The missing sapphire bracelet lay inside.
