The Ledger in the Mannequin

Chapter 07 - The Ledger in the Mannequin

Someone entered Marisol’s apartment while she was giving her police statement.

Nothing valuable was taken.

Drawers were emptied. Floorboards were lifted. Family photographs were removed from frames. The intruder searched for paper.

Marisol did not keep the ledger at home.

For eleven years, she recorded high-value inventory by hand because digital counts could be altered. She hid the notebooks inside an old display mannequin in the Sterling House tailoring room.

The mannequin had been scheduled for disposal the day after the livestream.

Julian signed the order.

Detective Chen recovered seven notebooks from the hollow torso. They documented twenty-seven suspicious substitutions across four countries. Each entry listed date, official camera outage, assigned security staff, and insurance outcome.

Nora Mercer’s handwriting appeared in the first notebook.

Marisol had continued her work.

“Why not go to Helena?” Chen asked.

Marisol looked toward the billionaire seated nearby.

“Because Nora went to powerful people and lost everything.”

Helena had no answer.

The notebooks revealed the fraud financed more than personal wealth. Money moved through Aster Foundation into political donations, media agencies, and a private medical network that declared inconvenient employees unfit to testify.

One former appraiser spent six years under guardianship after accusing Conrad of switching a royal tiara.

Another died before his appeal.

The conspiracy survived because every witness appeared isolated, emotional, indebted, or compromised.

The mirror camera changed that.

It did not prove fifteen years of fraud. It proved the method.

Julian Ross was arrested at the Canadian border. He claimed he followed Darren’s orders and believed the swaps were temporary insurance maneuvers.

“Temporary theft is still theft,” Chen said.

Julian offered a storage location.

Inside an Aster warehouse, investigators found hundreds of empty jewelry cases, replica molds, and donor records. The real pieces were gone.

On a wall map, one red pin marked Port Nineteen at a private aviation terminal.

The Solstice necklace had passed through there six hours after the livestream.

Customs footage showed a courier carrying a professional camera bag.
