The Boutique Goes Dark

Chapter 12 - The Boutique Goes Dark
Police were twelve minutes away.
Helena and Marisol were already inside Sterling House reviewing archive boxes in the basement. When Mirror Three alerted, the building’s power shut off.
Emergency lights failed.
Darren had disabled the official system from the security room.
He did not know the mirror cameras had separate batteries.
Marisol watched the feed on her tablet. Darren crossed the sales floor toward the antique mirror, carrying the Solstice diamond and a thermal cutter.
“He wants the camera drive,” she whispered.
“No,” Helena said. “He wants what is behind it.”
Elias had built a narrow founder’s compartment into the mirror wall decades earlier. The Solstice setting, once joined to the center stone, opened it.
Inside waited the original trust archive.
Darren reached the mirror.
Helena activated the silent fire alarm from the basement. Nothing happened. The alarm line had been cut.
They moved through a tailoring passage toward the loading dock.
A steel shutter dropped in front of them.
Darren’s voice came through the intercom.
“Leave the archive key on the counter.”
Helena answered, “You already have the stone.”
“I need the setting.”
The real necklace setting remained in police custody. Darren believed Helena had replaced it with a duplicate after the airport seizure.
Marisol understood before Helena did.
“He does not know the vault can open without the necklace.”
Elias’s thirty-one-point pattern could be entered manually from Nora’s notebooks.
Marisol had memorized it.
They reached the founder’s compartment from the service side and opened it while Darren cut through the mirror panel.
Inside were trust originals, serial ledgers, and analog film reels.
One reel was labeled NORA — FINAL INTERVIEW.
Darren entered the compartment holding the yellow diamond.
He saw the open vault and froze.
Helena held up Marisol’s tablet.
Mirror Three showed him entering, cutting the wall, and carrying the stolen stone.
“You keep forgetting the camera,” Helena said.
Darren smiled.
“No. I came because of it.”
He threw the diamond toward the floor.
Marisol caught the padded case before impact.
Police breached the loading door seconds later.
Darren was arrested without injury.
In his pocket they found a remote trigger connected to a device beneath the archive shelves.
It was designed to burn the trust records.

Mirror Three had not merely caught him.
It had made him desperate enough to bring the missing key home.
