The Fall of the Returned Son

Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Returned Son

The photograph of the brothers appeared online before dawn.

Helena’s media team claimed Ethan had secretly recruited Daniel to steal confidential company files. Victor filed a criminal complaint accusing Ethan of extortion, trespassing, and destruction of evidence in the archive fire.

Police arrested Ethan outside the courthouse where he had arrived for the second DNA collection.

Cameras surrounded him.

Helena had arranged the moment perfectly. Ethan was handcuffed beneath the Vale Global sign while news commentators questioned whether the “returned heir” was a criminal con artist.

The court postponed the DNA ruling.

The Golden Harbor vote moved forward.

From a holding cell, Ethan watched the board approve demolition of the workers’ neighborhood by a margin of one vote. Daniel had been barred from voting because of the criminal investigation. Victor used Daniel’s proxy in favor of the sale.

Outside Vale Tower, police pushed back furious residents. Samuel Price fell in the crowd and was taken to a hospital.

For the first time since surviving the ocean, Ethan felt truly defeated.

He had believed truth would move in a straight line once exposed. Instead, Helena turned every fact into fog. She controlled the lawyers, the board, and the timing. Even his survival had become evidence against him.

Miriam visited during the afternoon.

She placed Arthur’s old winter coat on the table between them.

“The police released this from storage,” she said. “Your father wore it the last night he left the house.”

Ethan almost laughed. “A coat will not stop the demolition.”

“No,” Miriam replied. “But your father never trusted safes.”

She showed him the uneven stitching beneath the collar.

Inside the lining was a thin envelope wrapped in waxed cloth.

Arthur had written Ethan’s name across it.

The letter began with an apology.

By the time Ethan finished reading, his hands were shaking.

Arthur knew someone was poisoning him. He knew the trust would be attacked. And he had changed the terms of inheritance one final time.

The fortune did not belong to Helena.

It did not belong to Daniel.

It did not even belong to Ethan.
