The Empty Grave

Chapter 03 - The Empty Grave
Two years earlier, Ethan had boarded a company helicopter carrying documents his father had ordered him to deliver to regulators. The folder contained evidence of secret transfers from Vale Global’s employee pension fund into shell companies registered in Helena’s name.
The helicopter never reached the mainland.
Ethan remembered the warning light, the pilot shouting, and the violent drop toward the black Atlantic. He remembered metal tearing, freezing water, and the impossible weight of his own clothes pulling him downward.
He woke three days later in the cabin of a Portuguese fishing vessel.
Captain Tomás Reyes had found him clinging to wreckage nearly forty miles from the official crash site. Ethan had no identification, a fractured shoulder, and swelling in his brain. For six weeks, he could not remember his surname.
By the time his memory returned, the world had already buried him.
News reports said the helicopter had exploded on impact. Victor Hale had identified a burned body recovered near the coast as Ethan’s, using dental records supplied by Vale House. A private funeral had been held. Helena had wept in front of cameras while Daniel stood beside an empty coffin.
Ethan tried to call home from a clinic in Porto.
The first three calls never connected. On the fourth, a man answered and said Daniel had moved abroad. Minutes later, two strangers arrived at the clinic asking about an unidentified crash survivor.
Tomás helped Ethan leave through the laundry entrance.
For months, Ethan lived under another name while he rebuilt his strength and traced the men who had searched for him. Both worked for Crown Meridian Security, a company paid through one of Helena’s shell corporations.
He wanted to return immediately, but Tomás stopped him.
“A man who survives a storm can still drown by running back into it,” the captain warned. “Find out who made the waves.”
Ethan listened.
He gathered bank records, flight maintenance logs, and photographs of Victor meeting Crown Meridian executives. The evidence suggested sabotage, but it did not prove who had ordered it.
Then, six weeks before the gala, Ethan received a package with no return address. Inside was his father’s old signet ring and a note written in Arthur Vale’s unmistakable hand.
