Chapter 12 - The Woman at Platform Seven
Nora returned to the station alone and sat on a bench near Platform Seven.
At exactly six in the evening, a woman in a gray coat appeared across the tracks. She looked older than the photograph, with short dark hair and the wary posture of someone who expected every stranger to be dangerous.
Clara Voss did not approach until Nora placed Arthur’s letter on the bench.
“I watched his funeral from a hotel television,” Clara said. “Then I watched Ethan’s.”
She had discovered the stolen pension transfers and warned Arthur. He ordered a private audit, but Victor intercepted it. Soon afterward, Dr. Roth found traces of a restricted heart medication in Arthur’s blood at a dosage far beyond what had been prescribed.
Roth wanted to report it. Helena threatened her daughter.
Clara arranged their escape.
Before leaving, Clara copied everything onto two encrypted drives. One was hidden in the station locker. The other was given to Arthur.
“Where did he put it?” Nora asked.
Clara looked at the letter.
“He said the house itself would testify.”
Ethan met Clara in a secure apartment that night. She confirmed the trust amendment and agreed to appear in court, but only if Dr. Roth received protection.
Daniel used a company jet registered under his own name to bring Roth home before Helena could stop them.
At the airport, Victor’s lawyers served Daniel with an order freezing his assets. He handed the papers back unread.
“I finally know what they cost,” he said.
Dr. Roth’s testimony was devastating. Arthur had not died from natural heart failure. Repeated overdoses had weakened him over several weeks. On the night of his death, someone administered a final dose through a drink.
Roth could not name the person.
But Clara remembered a detail from the private audit meeting. Arthur had installed analog security cameras after discovering the company network was compromised.
The footage did not connect to the internet.
It recorded onto physical tape.
