Chapter 04 - The Invisible Woman
The note led Ethan to Miriam Bell, the former head housekeeper of Vale House.
For thirty-two years, Miriam had moved through the mansion without wealthy guests remembering her face. She knew which politicians had accepted envelopes in the east salon, which directors drank before board meetings, and which family members cried only when doors were closed.
Helena had dismissed her one week after Arthur’s death.
Ethan found Miriam living above a laundromat in a coastal town. She opened the door, saw the scar on his temple, and slapped him across the face.
Then she pulled him into her arms.
“I watched them bury you,” she said.
Miriam explained that Arthur had grown suspicious of Helena during his final year. He discovered that she and Victor were redirecting company money through the Golden Harbor Project. When Arthur threatened to expose them, his medication began arriving in unmarked containers. His health declined quickly.
Three nights before his death, Arthur asked Miriam to hide the signet ring and a sealed ledger.
“He said you would know what the ring meant,” Miriam told Ethan. “He said Daniel might still be saved, but only if you did not force him to choose too soon.”
The ledger had been concealed inside an old service wall at Vale House. Before Miriam could retrieve it, a fire destroyed part of the servants’ wing. Helena blamed faulty wiring. Miriam believed someone had searched the rooms first.
She had managed to save only one charred page.
The page listed payments to Crown Meridian Security, the same firm connected to the men who hunted Ethan in Portugal. At the bottom appeared Victor Hale’s initials.
Ethan wanted to confront Victor privately. Miriam disagreed.
“Men like Victor confess only when silence becomes more dangerous than truth.”
That was why Ethan chose the gala. Cameras, witnesses, and Helena’s entire circle would be present. He did not expect Victor to collapse, but the reaction confirmed what Miriam already suspected.
Victor had not merely signed a false certificate.
