The Night Gold Burned

Chapter 15 - The Night Gold Burned

Helena appeared live from Vale House wearing the same gold dress she had worn at the gala.

She stood beneath the chandelier and told viewers that her family was being destroyed by forged evidence, corrupt journalists, and an unstable impostor. Behind her, the ballroom glittered as if nothing had changed.

Ethan watched from a police command vehicle outside the estate.

Investigators had warrants, but Helena’s security team blocked the gates. While lawyers argued, smoke rose from the east wing.

The fire alarm failed.

Mrs. Cole used an old maintenance radio to guide guests toward the garden doors. Daniel entered through the service corridor to help elderly board members escape.

Ethan followed firefighters into the house.

The blaze spread unnaturally fast along prepared lines, but sprinklers in the ballroom activated before the flames reached the archive passage. Water poured from the ceiling. Gold decorations curled and blackened.

Helena remained on the stage, screaming that no one could take the house from her.

Then Mason Rook emerged from behind the curtains.

He carried the second encrypted drive taken from Arthur years earlier. Helena demanded it. Mason demanded money and safe passage.

Their argument played through the live microphones.

“You said the crash would leave nothing!” Helena shouted.

Mason looked toward the cameras too late.

The entire country heard her.

He ran toward the tunnel entrance, but Daniel closed the iron gate from the control panel. Police arrested Mason in the cellar.

Helena tried to flee through the west gallery. Ethan found her standing before Arthur’s portrait, soaked by sprinkler water, gold makeup streaking down her face.

“You should have stayed dead,” she told him.

Ethan did not touch her.

He stepped aside as investigators entered.

Helena looked at Daniel. “Tell them this is your brother’s revenge.”

Daniel’s voice broke, but he answered clearly.

“No, Mother. This is the truth arriving late.”

Handcuffs closed around Helena’s wrists.

Behind her, a sheet of gold leaf detached from the ceiling and floated into the dirty water.
