Chapter 13 - The House Testifies
The ballroom’s old camera system had been concealed during renovations. The visible cameras were digital, but behind a decorative vent near the chandelier ran an original film mechanism installed by Arthur’s grandfather.
Mrs. Cole found the locked recording cabinet in a maintenance passage.
Most reels had been removed.
One remained jammed behind a broken spindle.
The footage showed the ballroom on the night Arthur died. Helena hosted a small dinner for board members. Victor stood near the bar. Daniel had not yet arrived.
Arthur appeared weak but alert. He refused a drink offered by Helena and set it on a table.
Victor distracted him with a document.
Helena exchanged the glass.
Minutes later, Arthur collapsed.
The footage had no sound, yet the sequence was clear.
Then came the detail no one expected.
Mason Rook, the Crown Meridian executive believed responsible for Ethan’s helicopter sabotage, entered through the service door carrying a medical case. He was the man Daniel remembered seeing in a gray coat, disguised beneath a hooded rain cover.
Mason checked Arthur’s pulse and nodded to Helena.
Victor looked horrified.
Helena did not.
The reel continued. After Arthur’s body was removed, Victor and Mason argued. Mason shoved a file into Victor’s hands. Helena pointed toward the camera vent.
Mason climbed a ladder and removed what he believed was the recording reel.
He took the wrong one.
Arthur had installed a second hidden recorder inside the wall.
Nora made three verified copies before anyone left the room.
Helena’s attorneys tried to suppress the footage, claiming it was illegally obtained. The judge ruled that the recording belonged to the trust, not Helena personally.
Prosecutors opened a formal homicide investigation.
Mason Rook disappeared.
Victor stopped answering calls.
Helena remained inside Vale House, surrounded by private security, still insisting the video had been manipulated.
That night, Ethan stood alone beneath the chandelier where he had returned.
He looked at the place his father had fallen.
Daniel joined him.
“I should have known,” Daniel said.
“You were her son.”
“That is not an excuse.”
“No,” Ethan replied. “But it explains where the blindfold came from.”
Above them, gold light reflected from the ceiling.
