The North Star Rises From the Harbor

Chapter 10 - The North Star Rises From the Harbor
Divers located the North Star wreck near Greyhaven Point.
The official coordinates had been altered in the coast guard report. Celia found the real location inside Marcus’s files.
The wreck rested beneath eighty feet of water, its stern embedded in silt.
Federal investigators recovered the engine control unit and a sealed emergency beacon.
The beacon had transmitted a distress signal at 11:39 p.m.—eight minutes before the time recorded in the official investigation.
Someone disabled the signal after thirty-seven seconds.
Data from the engine unit showed the fuel valve was deliberately locked open from the bridge.
Marcus Voss had commanded the bridge.
A salvage team also recovered human remains from a sealed lower compartment.
For twenty-two years, the family believed Gabriel died in the upper-deck explosion. The bones belonged to him.
A fracture on the skull matched the metal bar visible in the film.
Gabriel had been struck before the fire and locked below deck.
Murder charges became possible.
The compartment contained another body.
Charles Vale.
Adrian’s father had not been in London, and he had not survived the North Star.
The man who returned to the family after the disaster had been someone else.
Adrian stared at the forensic report.
Photographs of “Charles” after the fire always showed severe facial bandaging from claimed burns. He recovered privately, avoided old friends, and allowed Beatrice to speak for him.
DNA from Charles’s preserved remains did not match tissue stored under his name at the family medical clinic.
Adrian demanded exhumation of the man buried as his father.
The remains belonged to Samuel Crane, Beatrice’s younger brother—a financier who disappeared during the same year.
Beatrice had replaced Charles with Samuel after the fire.
The impersonation allowed them to sign trust amendments, maintain control, and convince thirteen-year-old Adrian that his father survived.
Adrian remembered a thousand small differences he had explained as trauma.
The left hand used for writing.
The unfamiliar childhood stories.
The way “Father” stopped calling him by a private nickname.
Beatrice had not only killed Gabriel.
She stole Adrian’s father and replaced him with a performance.
Mira found him sitting outside the morgue.
He looked at her with the shame of someone who believed deception should have been easier to detect.
“I lived with him for twelve years.”
“You were a child when it started.”
“I became an adult.”
“So did I. I still believed my father’s name was Hart because that was the truth I was given.”
Grief did not compete well.

They sat in silence.
Two descendants of the same family had lost different lives to the same lie.
