The Safe Behind the Navigation Wall

Chapter 05 - The Safe Behind the Navigation Wall

The service passage opened beneath the main staircase.

Guests had been confined to the ballroom under the excuse of a security incident. Their phones still carried the slap video beyond the yacht, but the lower decks had lost signal.

Elena led Mira and Adrian through the crew galley.

A young dishwasher saw them and silently pointed toward an unlocked pantry.

Not every worker was prepared to challenge Beatrice openly.

Some still chose a side through small acts.

The chart room stood beside the bridge. Elena used an old service code to enter.

Behind a modern navigation screen, she removed four screws and exposed a brass plate bearing the crowned sea-lion crest.

Mira inserted the key.

The panel opened onto a narrow steel safe.

Inside lay a waterproof ledger, two film canisters, a marriage certificate, and an envelope addressed to Adrian.

Mira touched the certificate first.

Gabriel Vale and Lydia Shaw had married legally seven months before the North Star fire.

The witness signature belonged to Elena Ruiz.

Mira looked at her.

“You knew.”

“I promised your mother the paper would survive even if we didn’t.”

The ledger documented transfers from the Vale Seafarers Pension Fund into shell companies controlled by Beatrice. Gabriel had discovered more than theft. Vale vessels were intentionally overinsured, sent on unsafe routes, then declared losses after maintenance failures.

Workers died.

Claims enriched the holding company.

The final pages listed planned testimony before a federal maritime panel.

The hearing never occurred.

Adrian opened the envelope.

Little brother,

If this reaches you, Aunt Beatrice has already called me unstable or dead. You told her about Lydia because you trusted her. Do not spend your life punishing the boy you were. Spend it deciding what kind of man benefits from what she did next.

Adrian could not continue reading.

Mira took the film canisters.

One label read NORTH STAR — ENGINE ROOM.

The other read DECK 4 — 11:42 PM.

A warning alarm sounded.

Voss had discovered the open safe.

Elena copied the ledger with her phone while Adrian sent images through the yacht’s emergency satellite transmitter. The connection was slow.

Security struck the chart-room door.

Mira found a manual lever beneath the desk.

“Lifeboat release,” Elena said.

The door began to bend inward.

Adrian transmitted the marriage certificate and first ledger pages to a federal prosecutor he trusted.

Then the power failed.

Darkness covered the room.

Outside, Beatrice’s voice came through the intercom.

“Mira Hart, surrender the watch and documents. In return, no charges will be filed over tonight’s theft.”

Mira held the marriage certificate against her chest.

“My whole life,” she called back, “was the evidence you stole first.”

The chart-room window looked down toward a maintenance launch secured beside the hull.

Elena pulled the lever.

May you like

The launch dropped into black water.

They climbed through the window as security broke the door.
