The Captain Who Survived Every Inquiry

Chapter 04 - The Captain Who Survived Every Inquiry

Marcus Voss had commanded Vale vessels for thirty-four years.

He was celebrated for calm leadership during the North Star disaster. Newspapers praised him for rescuing three guests and remaining aboard until flames reached the upper deck.

No article mentioned that he arrived at the gala before Beatrice ordered the yacht back to harbor.

Voss entered the clinic wearing his white captain’s uniform.

“Mr. Vale, the coast guard has requested we preserve all items connected to the disturbance.”

Adrian looked at the pocket watch.

“The coast guard called within fifteen minutes?”

“Mrs. Vale contacted them.”

Beatrice was creating an official chain of custody she controlled.

Mira stood.

“The watch stays with me.”

Voss smiled politely.

“Miss Hart, it may be stolen property.”

“So may your reputation.”

Elena turned away to hide a reaction.

Voss’s eyes sharpened.

He told Adrian that the company’s legal team had found no record of Lydia giving birth. He also claimed the North Star’s recovered medical files listed Gabriel as sterile after a childhood infection.

Adrian knew that was false. Gabriel had once confessed that Lydia was pregnant and asked whether Adrian could keep a secret from Beatrice.

Adrian had been thirteen.

He told their aunt the next morning because he thought pregnancy meant an engagement party.

Three weeks later, the North Star burned.

The memory entered him like ice.

Beatrice learned of the child through Adrian.

Voss asked the guards to escort Mira to a guest cabin until authorities arrived.

Adrian refused.

The captain invoked emergency maritime authority, arguing a security threat existed aboard the vessel.

Adrian held his gaze.

“You are captain because my signature renews your contract every year.”

“And I command this ship while at sea.”

The engines slowed.

The yacht was no longer moving toward the public marina. It had turned south, away from city lights.

Elena checked the navigation display.

“We’re heading for Vale Shipyard.”

The private shipyard belonged to Beatrice’s trust. No reporters or independent police could enter without permission.

Adrian called the bridge.

No one answered.

Voss locked the clinic door from outside.

“Remain here for your safety.”

Mira heard metal engage inside the frame.

The same family that accused her of theft was now taking her to private property against her will.

Elena opened a cabinet and removed a medical oxygen wrench.

She pointed toward a narrow laundry hatch.

“Service crew built this yacht,” she said. “Owners know the grand stairs. We know how the walls breathe.”

They crawled through the hatch into the linen passage.

Adrian followed last.

Behind them, Voss ordered security to search every deck.

Ahead, the brass key waited inside Mira’s pocket.

Elena knew what it opened.

The Aurelia had been built around one surviving section of the North Star.

Its original chart safe remained behind the captain’s office.
