Chapter 17 - Celia’s Sentence
Celia Voss pleaded guilty to unlawful surveillance, privacy violations, and endangerment connected to placing Mira aboard the Aurelia.
Her cooperation reduced the sentence, but the judge rejected her request for probation.
“You exposed crimes,” the judge said. “You also made a young woman part of a plan without her consent.”
Celia served eighteen months.
Mira did not oppose the sentence.
Good intentions could coexist with punishment.
Marcus Voss received life imprisonment for Gabriel and Charles’s murders.
From prison, he refused contact with Celia.
She began therapy and later worked for an independent maritime safety nonprofit, never on investigations involving Vale Maritime.
Some survivors refused to work with her.
She accepted that boundary.
Elena retired from yacht service and joined the worker-trust oversight council. Her first proposal required every vessel to provide direct reporting channels outside the captain’s authority.
The rule was called Elena’s Line by employees.
She disliked the name but liked the policy.
Captain appointments became subject to crew safety review. Service workers gained the right to stop hospitality operations after assault without losing wages.
The change emerged directly from the gala.
Before, if a guest struck a server, management removed the server to preserve the event.
Now the event stopped.
The first test came aboard a charter vessel when a wealthy passenger shoved a bartender. The crew suspended service and returned to harbor.
The passenger threatened lawsuits.
The company supported the crew.
Mira watched the report without speaking.
The change could not undo the teak deck.
It prevented the next worker from kneeling alone while guests protected invitations.
The Aurelia training ship held its first graduation the following spring. Former waiters, cleaners, and deckhands received certifications in navigation, engineering, and maritime management.
Mira attended in a simple navy dress.
No one introduced her as an heiress.
