The Watch Begins Moving Again

Chapter 18 - The Watch Begins Moving Again
The pocket watch had remained stopped at 11:47 for twenty-two years.
Mira took it to an independent horologist named Samuel Cho. She asked him not to polish the case or repair the scratch.
He opened the movement carefully.
A small metal fragment had lodged between the gears during the North Star explosion. Beneath it, he found a strip of paper rolled inside the housing.
Gabriel had written one sentence:
If the hands stop, the record begins.
The stopped time was deliberate.
Gabriel inserted the fragment when he realized the ship’s clocks and official logs could be altered. The watch preserved the true moment of the first explosion.
Engine data and film timestamps matched 11:47.
The final technical dispute in Beatrice’s appeal collapsed.
Samuel asked whether Mira wanted the watch restored.
She thought of Lydia carrying it through hiding, Elena protecting it, and Beatrice recognizing it on the deck.
“Can it run without erasing where it stopped?”
“Yes.”
He repaired the mechanism but left a tiny mark on the dial at 11:47.
When Mira wound it, the second hand moved.
The sound was faint.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
She brought it to Gabriel’s grave after his remains were identified and buried beside Lydia.
Adrian stood several feet away.
Mira placed the watch between the stones, then changed her mind and picked it up.
Objects did not need burial to prove love.
She wore it around her neck.
Adrian asked what time meant now.
Mira answered, “Not the moment he died.”
“What then?”
“The moment their version stopped being the only one.”
The watch became part of her daily life rather than an artifact removed for ceremonies. Sometimes she forgot it beneath a sweater. Sometimes it struck a table when she leaned forward.

The scratches increased.
History continued touching ordinary surfaces.
