Charles Vale died twelve years after the North Star fire.
Adrian remembered him as distant but honorable—a man weakened by losing his eldest son and wife within the same year. Beatrice assumed company leadership while Charles withdrew from public life.
The film challenged that memory.
Frame by frame, Gabriel stood near the stern holding the pension ledger. Charles reached for it. Beatrice watched from the doorway.
The final image showed Marcus Voss approaching behind Gabriel with a metal bar.
The film ended before contact.
Adrian sat alone in the prosecutor’s office.
“If my father helped them, I inherited from all three.”
Naomi Cross answered, “Inheritance is not guilt. Concealment after knowledge can become complicity.”
Adrian knew the difference would matter only if he acted.
He authorized investigators to search every Vale archive, including family residences and private trusts. The board suspended him before sunrise, claiming he exposed the company to catastrophic liability.
Beatrice became interim chair again.
She immediately froze Mira’s wages, accused Elena of industrial espionage, and offered cash settlements to crew members who signed statements saying Mira attacked first.
Two accepted.
Five refused.
The DNA samples were collected under court supervision. Gabriel’s preserved blood came from a military medical file stored before Beatrice controlled company records.
The result would take four days.
During that time, Mira returned to Greyhaven with Elena.
They visited Lydia’s grave.
The marker carried only LYDIA HART — BELOVED MOTHER.
Mira placed a copy of the marriage certificate beneath a stone.
“You were Lydia Vale,” Elena said.
Mira shook her head.
“She chose Hart because Vale was hunting her.”
Names were not automatically honors.
At Lydia’s old apartment, they found a locked sewing cabinet. The pocket watch key fit a second compartment inside the bottom drawer.
There were letters from Gabriel, a birth record, and Lydia’s diary.
One entry described Charles Vale visiting her two years after the fire.
He offered money in exchange for Mira’s custody.
Lydia refused.
Charles warned that Beatrice would never allow Gabriel’s child to reach twenty-one because the original trust transferred controlling shares to the firstborn descendant.
Mira had turned twenty-one eleven months earlier.
The gala was not her first accidental encounter with the Vales.
Beatrice knew who she was before the slap.
The hospitality agency that assigned Mira to the Aurelia was owned by a Vale shell company.
Someone had placed her on that yacht.
Either Beatrice wanted the watch.
Or someone else wanted Mira close enough to expose it.
Elena examined the agency signature.
