Amelia moved from Saint Rowan into an independent apartment near the museum.
She refused Clara’s offer to live together.
“I have spent twenty-four years in rooms other people selected,” she said. “Even your room would still be selected.”
Clara understood.
They met for breakfast twice a week.
Amelia learned about Clara’s childhood, university, first apartment, failed relationships, favorite music, and work.
She grieved each missing year separately.
Clara found the grief exhausting.
At times Amelia asked questions faster than she could answer, as if facts could rebuild motherhood.
A therapist helped them establish boundaries.
No surprise visits.
No public appearances together without agreement.
No calling Thomas for decisions about Clara.
Amelia struggled most with Julian.
She blamed herself for Clara becoming attached to Eleanor’s grandson.
Clara stopped her.
“My choices are not evidence you failed from captivity.”
Amelia answered, “I am still your mother.”
“You are. You are also someone I am meeting.”
The statement hurt, but it allowed honesty.
Their relationship grew through ordinary acts.
Amelia taught Clara a card game.
Clara helped Amelia choose kitchen plates.
They argued about curtains.
One afternoon, Amelia fell asleep on Clara’s sofa. Clara covered her with a blanket and sat nearby.
No revelation occurred.
