Clara’s legal birth certificate identified her as Clara Amelia Marlowe.
Thomas had changed it to Bennett under a protective court order.
After the truth emerged, journalists began calling her Clara Marlowe.
She disliked how quickly a famous surname replaced the one attached to every ordinary year of her life.
She petitioned for a new legal name:
Clara Bennett-Marlowe.
Thomas’s care remained.
Amelia’s history returned.
Neither erased the other.
Some critics said she used the Marlowe name for influence.
Others said keeping Bennett honored a complicit man.
Clara stopped treating public agreement as necessary.
A name could record contradiction.
At her first lecture under the new name, she spoke about conservation ethics.
“Restoration does not mean returning an object to an imagined perfect beginning,” she said. “It means stabilizing what survived while making alterations visible.”
Amelia listened from the back row.
Thomas watched online.
