The restoration studio held the first major physical clue.

Clara returned to the portrait of Elias Marlowe she had restored two years earlier. Infrared imaging revealed a second painted figure beneath the founder’s shoulder.

A woman stood beside him holding a ledger.

Her face had been painted over.

Archive photographs identified her as Miriam Weiss, a refugee art historian who helped establish the collection and wrote the original trust.

Marlowe history erased her completely.

Miriam’s descendants lived in Chicago.

Her granddaughter, Ruth Weiss, had spent decades asking the foundation about family paintings. She received polite letters saying no records existed.

Clara invited Ruth to the studio.

When the hidden image appeared on the screen, Ruth touched her grandmother’s outline.

“They made him a founder and her an assistant.”

The original trust signatures showed equal authority.

Miriam was co-founder.

The discovery changed legal claims. The foundation was not solely a family institution mismanaged by descendants. It had been created through partnership and then rewritten around one surname.

Clara ordered the overpainting preserved rather than fully removed.

Visitors would see both layers—the woman and the attempt to erase her.

Eleanor’s attorneys objected. They claimed Clara lacked museum authority.

The public trustees had already suspended Eleanor.

Rosa formed a provenance council including claimant families, workers, historians, and conservators.

Clara was offered the chair.

She declined.

“I found evidence. That does not make me the person who should decide every outcome.”

Ruth accepted a temporary co-chair role with Rosa.

The first returning family chose to leave one painting in the museum under a shared-custody agreement. Another demanded immediate return. A third wanted the work sold to fund refugee education.

Restitution did not have one form.
