Chapter 12 - The Trial Begins
The trial opened eleven months after the breakfast at Whitehaven.
Adrian faced charges for Daniel’s death, attempted arson, assault, coercion, fraud, and conspiracy. Evelyn had pleaded guilty to lesser conspiracy charges in exchange for testimony. Rourke and Vanessa would also take the stand.
The courtroom filled before sunrise.
Adrian entered in a dark suit, looking thinner but composed. When Claire walked past the defense table, he whispered, “You look beautiful.”
A marshal told him to remain silent.
The prosecution began with the marriage rather than the murder.
They showed how Adrian isolated Claire after Daniel’s death, changed passwords, dismissed her advisors, and presented forged documents while she was sedated. Medical records confirmed the prescription he claimed proved instability had been ordered by a doctor retained by Beaumont Crown.
Then came the breakfast-room security footage.
The camera had no audio, but the image was enough: Adrian leaning over Claire, his finger inches from her face, the red mark already visible on her cheek. Evelyn sat watching. Claire touched her injury, began to cry, then stood and struck both hands against the table. Orange juice rose in a bright arc. Adrian and Evelyn recoiled.
The defense called it a domestic argument followed by an emotional outburst.
Claire took the stand.
Graham Holt asked why she remained married if Adrian was controlling.
“Because he made leaving feel more dangerous than staying.”
“Yet you attended galas, traveled, and lived in luxury.”
“A beautiful room can still be locked.”
He asked whether she overturned the breakfast table to frighten Adrian.
“No. I struck the table because he told me to sign away my father’s house and apologize for being hit.”
The jury watched her carefully.
Graham suggested she fabricated the abuse after finding evidence of the affair.
Claire looked toward Vanessa, seated behind prosecutors.
“The affair explained why he lied to me. It did not create the bruise.”
Evelyn testified next.
She described the hidden partnership, the boat sabotage, and Adrian’s demand that Daniel never return. The defense portrayed her as a mother sacrificing her son to save herself.
For once, Evelyn did not protect the family image.
“Yes,” she said. “I am saving what remains of my life. That does not make his crimes imaginary.”
Rourke produced the ventilation fuse. Experts matched it to Daniel’s boat. Vanessa authenticated the forged notary book and offshore transfers. Cole Mercer described receiving Adrian’s order to burn the lighthouse.
The strongest evidence came last.
Investigators recovered a deleted voicemail from Adrian’s yacht phone recorded the night Daniel died. His voice spoke over engine noise.
“It is done. Claire thinks the sea took him.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Claire did not.
