Chapter 07 - The Board Without Adrian
The emergency board meeting began at nine the next morning.
Adrian’s chair remained empty.
Twelve directors gathered inside Beaumont Crown’s headquarters while police searched airports, marinas, and private roads. Some directors wanted to postpone the meeting until Adrian could defend himself. Others worried postponement would trigger lender defaults.
Naomi placed Lenora’s original partnership contract on the table.
The coercion clause suspended every Beaumont family vote once a West beneficiary presented credible evidence of fraud or violence. Claire’s forty-one percent became controlling when combined with two independent directors who had long questioned Adrian’s finances.
Claire joined by video from the hospital.
Her voice was rough from smoke, but she refused Naomi’s offer to speak for her.
“For years, this board treated my family’s ownership as ceremonial,” she said. “It was easier to believe the Beaumont story than examine the documents beneath it.”
Chairman Peter Lang defended the board. He claimed Daniel never formally presented his concerns.
Naomi played the recording of Daniel confronting Evelyn.
Silence followed.
Vanessa then testified through a secure connection. She identified offshore accounts, false guarantees, and debt hidden from directors. Beaumont Crown owed nearly three billion dollars more than its public statements admitted.
One director lowered his head into his hands.
Claire proposed immediate actions: remove Adrian as chief executive, suspend Evelyn’s honorary chairmanship, freeze executive bonuses, protect employees who cooperated, and appoint an independent restructuring team.
Peter warned that removing the family name could destroy investor confidence.
Claire looked at the portraits behind him. “The name created the crisis.”
The vote passed eight to four.
For the first time in seventy years, no Beaumont controlled Beaumont Crown Resorts.
The company was renamed Westhaven Hospitality pending shareholder approval. A public statement acknowledged Lenora West as co-founder and controlling investor. The announcement spread before the meeting ended.
At a private marina forty miles south, Adrian watched the news from inside a borrowed yacht. Evelyn sat across from him, pale beneath dark glasses.
“You should have left Claire alone,” she said.
Adrian turned on her. “You told me she would break.”
“She did. Just not in the direction we expected.”
They planned to cross into international waters before dawn. Evelyn had access to accounts Daniel never discovered. Adrian believed they could rebuild elsewhere.
Then the yacht’s engines shut down.
Harbor police surrounded the vessel.
Cole Mercer had given them the marina location in exchange for protective custody. Officers boarded with weapons lowered but ready.
Adrian looked toward the open sea only a few hundred yards away.
Evelyn did not resist. She placed her hands on the table and asked for an attorney.
Adrian backed toward the stern.
“Claire owns none of this,” he shouted. “She does not know how to run anything.”
An officer took his arm.
At the hospital, Claire watched the arrest live. Reporters shouted questions as Adrian was led onto the dock in handcuffs.
He turned toward the cameras and spoke directly to her.
“You will destroy everyone just to punish me.”
Claire switched off the screen.
The first payroll review was waiting on her tablet. Thirty thousand employees depended on decisions Adrian had hidden from them.
