The Woman in Room 1408

Chapter 04 - The Woman in Room 1408
Vanessa Cole checked into Room 1408 under another name.
The Beaumont Crown flagship hotel rose above the marina like a monument to Adrian’s confidence. He had designed its glass lobby, its rooftop pool, and the private elevators reserved for people whose money insulated them from ordinary doors.
Vanessa had helped finance every floor.
For seven years she had converted Adrian’s demands into spreadsheets. At first, the irregular transfers seemed temporary—money moved between developments to satisfy lenders. Then came shell companies, hidden debt, and payments to officials who accelerated permits. Each compromise made the next easier.
Adrian made guilt feel like partnership.
The affair began after Daniel West’s death. Adrian told Vanessa that Claire was unstable, cold, and incapable of understanding the pressure he carried. He promised divorce once the trust was transferred. Vanessa believed him because ambition preferred his version.
Now news footage showed Claire leaving the library with a bruise across her face.
Vanessa opened the hotel safe and removed the original notary book. Several entries had been altered. Claire’s supposed signature appeared on a date when the entire family attended Daniel’s memorial at sea. Vanessa had written the false certification herself.
A knock sounded.
“Room service.”
She had ordered nothing.
Vanessa slipped the book into her handbag and opened the door with the chain attached. A man in a gray maintenance uniform stood outside, but his shoes were polished black—the shoes worn by Adrian’s private security staff.
She slammed the door.
The lock shuddered under his shoulder.
Vanessa ran to the balcony and called Naomi Price. She had ignored Naomi’s earlier messages, but desperation changed pride into clarity.
“I have the notary book,” Vanessa said. “Adrian sent someone.”
Naomi kept her on the line while hotel security and police moved upstairs. The man escaped through the service stairwell, leaving behind a cloned key card registered to Adrian’s executive office.
Vanessa was taken to a secure location.
At Whitehaven, Claire agreed to meet her with attorneys present.
Vanessa entered the library pale and sleepless. The two women faced each other across Lenora’s old desk. Between them lay years of lies, secret hotel rooms, and signatures that nearly erased Claire’s inheritance.
“I told myself you had everything,” Vanessa said. “I thought taking him from you was not really taking.”
Claire’s voice stayed quiet. “You helped him tell a court I could not control my own life.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
She offered the notary book, company passwords, and records of offshore accounts. In exchange, she wanted protection from Adrian and consideration from prosecutors.
Claire did not grant forgiveness. She authorized Naomi to negotiate only if Vanessa provided the whole truth.
“There is one more thing,” Vanessa said.
She opened a folder containing insurance correspondence from the week before Daniel’s boat exploded. Adrian had increased the policy on Daniel’s life and named Beaumont Crown as a secondary creditor, claiming Daniel guaranteed company loans.
Daniel had never signed the guarantee.
The signature was another forgery.
Vanessa looked at Claire. “Evelyn arranged the boat inspection. Adrian ordered the insurance change. I processed it.”
Outside, waves struck the cliffs below Whitehaven.
