Evelyn’s Version of the Sea

Chapter 09 - Evelyn’s Version of the Sea

Evelyn Beaumont asked to speak with Claire before deciding whether to cooperate.

The meeting took place in a secured courthouse room. Evelyn wore gray detention clothing instead of silk, yet she sat with the same straight posture she maintained at breakfast. A glass partition separated them.

Claire did not come alone. Naomi and a prosecutor remained nearby.

Evelyn began with Lenora West.

She claimed Lenora willingly stepped away from public ownership because Charles Beaumont turned her small investments into an international company. In Evelyn’s version, the Beaumonts did not steal history; they improved it.

Claire placed the original ledgers against the glass. “Improvement usually does not require forged reports.”

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

Then she spoke about Daniel.

He had discovered hidden debt at the worst possible time. If he exposed it, lenders would close hotels and thousands would lose work. Evelyn hired Rourke to disable Daniel’s boat so he would miss the board meeting. She insisted she never ordered an explosion.

“Did Adrian know?”

“He knew we needed delay.”

“Did he change the insurance?”

“Yes.”

The answer came too quickly.

Claire understood Evelyn was willing to blame Adrian now. Yet grief did not care which liar became useful first.

“What happened on the boat?”

Evelyn looked toward the small window.

Rourke damaged the fuel system and removed the emergency beacon. The plan was for Daniel to drift until a second vessel “rescued” him after the meeting. But Daniel found the sabotage and tried to repair it. Fuel vapor ignited.

“Rourke called me after the explosion,” Evelyn said. “Adrian was standing beside me.”

“Why did neither of you call the coast guard?”

Evelyn’s eyes finally lowered.

Because rescue might have saved Daniel.

The silence inside the room became unbearable.

Claire rose, but Evelyn pressed one palm to the glass.

“I did what families like ours have always done,” she said. “We protected the institution.”

“You protected the name on the building.”

“The name fed people.”

“So did my grandmother’s money. You erased her anyway.”

Evelyn offered account passwords, Rourke’s last known location, and records linking Adrian to the insurance fraud. In exchange, she wanted reduced charges and protection from him.

Claire had no authority to promise a sentence. She told the prosecutor she would not oppose cooperation if it recovered employee funds and established the truth about Daniel.

Evelyn looked almost offended by the absence of revenge.

“You should hate me more.”

“I do not need to organize my life around what you deserve.”

Before leaving, Claire asked one final question.

“At breakfast, when Adrian leaned over me, why did you say nothing?”

Evelyn’s face became unreadable. “Because women in my family survived by making powerful men believe they were right.”

Claire thought of Lenora, hidden behind Charles. Evelyn, preserving Adrian. Vanessa, certifying his lies. Herself, apologizing after every wound.

“That is not survival,” Claire said. “That is inheritance.”

She walked out.

Hours later, Evelyn signed the cooperation agreement.

Her first disclosure led investigators to a coastal town in Portugal, where Rourke had lived under another name for four years.

For the first time, the sea began returning witnesses.
