The Fire Above the Sea

Chapter 06 - The Fire Above the Sea
The lighthouse filled with smoke faster than anyone expected.
The lower stairs were burning, cutting off the only exit. Naomi wrapped a scarf over her mouth while investigators searched for another route. Claire pressed against the salt-clouded window, fighting the panic climbing through her chest.
Adrian’s voice still came through the phone.
“Drop the ledgers from the north window,” he said. “Then move to the roof. Someone will reach you.”
Claire understood the trap. The wind would scatter paper into the sea, destroying the originals before firefighters arrived.
“You tried to kill my father,” she said.
“I tried to protect what he was too proud to understand.”
The admission was not complete, but it was enough to keep him talking.
Naomi silently activated the phone’s recording feature.
Claire asked about the boat. Adrian said Daniel gave them no choice. He insisted the explosion was supposed to frighten him, not kill him. Evelyn had hired Rourke to disable the engine so Daniel would miss the board meeting. The fuel leak, Adrian claimed, was Rourke’s mistake.
“Then why did you change the insurance?” Claire asked.
Silence.
A section of staircase collapsed in sparks.
Outside, June and estate workers saw smoke and called emergency services. Whitehaven’s groundskeeper remembered an old maintenance cable once used to raise lighthouse equipment. He drove a utility truck to the cliff and attached the line to the roof platform.
Inside, one investigator broke the upper window. Wind rushed through the room, feeding the fire but clearing enough smoke to see.
Claire tied the ledger case to the cable first.
Adrian heard the metal scrape. “What are you doing?”
“Saving what you were afraid of.”
The case descended toward the cliff path as firefighters arrived.
Naomi and the investigators climbed through the window onto the narrow roof. Claire followed last. Heat burned through the soles of her shoes. For one terrifying second she slipped, catching the iron rail with both hands.
Below, June screamed her name.
The groundskeeper raised the cable basket again. Claire stepped into it while flames burst through the lighthouse windows.
As she descended, the old lens cracked from the heat. Glass rained into the sea.
Adrian ended the call.
Police traced his signal to the guesthouse, but when they arrived, he and Evelyn were gone. In the garage they found fuel cans, maps of the estate, and a duplicate lighthouse key.
The man in the maintenance uniform from Vanessa’s hotel had been captured near the service road. He identified himself as Cole Mercer, head of Adrian’s private security. His phone contained a message sent minutes before the fire.
LIGHT IT AFTER THEY REACH THE TOP.
At the hospital, doctors treated Claire for smoke inhalation and burns on one palm. The bruise from breakfast had begun turning dark purple.
Naomi placed the rescued ledger beside her bed.
“You kept it,” Claire whispered.
“You did.”
The district attorney issued warrants for Adrian and Evelyn.
By evening, every news station showed the burning lighthouse above Whitehaven. Reporters called it a property dispute, a family war, and the collapse of a dynasty.
Claire knew it was something else.

The Beaumonts had spent decades using fire, water, money, and shame to destroy evidence.
This time, the evidence had survived them.
