The Marriage Contract

Chapter 03 - The Marriage Contract

The audit began in the library.

Every cabinet Adrian kept locked was opened under court supervision. Hard drives were copied. Documents were numbered. Naomi’s team worked beneath portraits of Beaumont men who had spent generations being credited for what Lenora West financed.

Claire remained near the window with an ice pack against her cheek.

Naomi handed her a document titled Postnuptial Capacity Agreement. Claire recognized her signature on the last page but not the paragraphs above it. According to the document, she had authorized Adrian to control her trust if she became “emotionally impaired.”

“When did I sign this?” Claire asked.

“Three days after your father’s funeral.”

She remembered those days only in fragments: sleeping pills, unanswered condolences, Adrian guiding her hand through stacks of insurance forms. He told her the papers allowed him to handle funeral expenses while she recovered.

The notary was Vanessa Cole, Beaumont Crown Resorts’ chief financial officer—and Adrian’s mistress.

Claire had learned about the affair a week earlier from hotel records and private messages. Yet seeing Vanessa’s name beneath the forged agreement revealed something colder. The affair was not merely betrayal. Vanessa had helped build the legal cage around her.

Naomi found a second document. It claimed Claire received twenty million dollars in exchange for surrendering all West voting rights. Bank records showed the money entered an account in her name, then moved within hours to a shell company controlled by Adrian.

“He paid you with money he stole from you,” Naomi said.

Claire almost laughed.

At the guesthouse above the cliffs, Adrian paced while Evelyn made calls. Their temporary removal from the mansion had already reached the board. Investors were asking why court officers occupied Whitehaven.

“We should have filed the capacity petition last year,” Evelyn said.

Adrian turned on her. “You said she was too frightened to challenge us.”

“She was until you marked her face.”

He flinched, not from remorse but accusation.

Evelyn reminded him that Beaumont Crown faced a refinancing vote in six days. Without control of Claire’s shares, Adrian could lose the company. The family had hidden debt through offshore properties. If lenders saw the real numbers, the empire would collapse.

“We need her signature before the board meets,” Evelyn said.

Adrian stared toward the mansion windows glowing across the garden. “She will sign.”

“How?”

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

She was waiting in a private suite at the Beaumont Crown flagship hotel, frightened because auditors had requested her files. Adrian told her to erase communications connected to the West trust.

Vanessa refused.

“You said Claire would never fight,” she whispered. “You said the papers were legal.”

Adrian’s tone softened. “Come to Whitehaven tonight. Bring the original notary book.”

Evelyn watched him end the call.

“You cannot trust her.”

“I do not need to trust her. I need the book.”

Back in the library, June opened a narrow drawer hidden behind a shelf. Inside lay Lenora West’s original partnership contract. The final page contained a handwritten clause no copy included.

If a Beaumont executive attempted to obtain West shares through coercion, all Beaumont family voting privileges would be suspended immediately.

Naomi read it twice.

Claire looked toward the darkening ocean.

Adrian believed he had six days before the board vote.

He did not know that one bruise, one forged contract, and one hidden clause could remove him by morning.
