The Lighthouse Ledger

Chapter 05 - The Lighthouse Ledger

Daniel’s letter mentioned original ledgers hidden inside Whitehaven, but the audit found nothing in the house.

June finally remembered a place Evelyn never allowed staff to enter: the abandoned lighthouse at the far edge of the estate. It had not guided ships for decades, yet Daniel visited it every Sunday before his death. He claimed the walk helped him think.

Claire, Naomi, and two investigators followed the cliff path at dawn. Wind pulled at their coats. Below, the sea struck black rocks with enough force to erase voices.

The lighthouse door was sealed with rust, but Claire’s key from the glasshouse fit.

Inside, dust covered the spiral staircase. At the top, beneath the old lens assembly, they found a compartment lined with waterproof metal. It contained Lenora’s handwritten financial books, company seals, and a portable recorder.

The ledgers revealed the true origin of Beaumont Crown Resorts.

Lenora West purchased the first coastal properties, designed the guest model, and supplied nearly all initial capital. Charles Beaumont contributed political connections and agreed to serve publicly as founder. In return, the West family retained controlling shares and veto power over land sales.

After Lenora’s death, the Beaumonts stopped reporting dividends to the West trust. Billions disappeared over three generations.

Daniel discovered the theft while reviewing Claire’s inheritance. He planned to expose it at a board meeting scheduled two days after his boat trip.

The recorder held his final conversation with Evelyn.

“You cannot take the company from Adrian,” she said.

“I am not taking it. I am returning what your family stole.”

“If you speak, thousands lose their jobs.”

“Then help me repair it quietly.”

“You still believe quiet people survive powerful families.”

The recording ended with a door closing.

An investigator rewound the file. In the final second, almost hidden beneath wind, Evelyn said a name.

“Call Rourke. The boat leaves at six.”

Rourke was the marine engineer who certified Daniel’s vessel hours before the explosion. He had disappeared shortly afterward.

Naomi warned Claire that the recording suggested conspiracy but did not prove murder. They needed the engineer, maintenance records, or physical evidence from the wreck.

Claire stared through the lighthouse glass at the ocean.

As a child, she believed lighthouses prevented ships from getting lost. Daniel taught her they did something simpler: they showed danger clearly enough for people to choose another path.

Her phone rang.

Adrian.

Naomi advised against answering. Claire put the call on speaker.

His voice was calm. “I know you found the lighthouse.”

Everyone in the room went still.

“How?” Claire asked.

“I know every place your father thought made him safe.”

A crash sounded below.

Smoke began rising through the stairwell.

Adrian continued, “Bring me the ledgers, and I will send help.”

Claire looked down. Flames climbed the wooden steps.

He had not called to negotiate.

He had called to make sure she understood who lit the fire.
