Chapter 11 - Margaret’s Version of Motherhood

Margaret requested a private meeting with Leah.

She brought no attorney.

They sat in the small bedroom Margaret once planned to convert into storage. Leah’s books had returned to the shelves, but unpacked boxes still lined the wall.

Margaret said she had never intended to make Leah feel unwanted.

Leah asked why her suitcase had been open before the family entered the room.

Margaret admitted packing began that morning.

She believed removing Leah quickly would protect Julian from scandal and allow the family to challenge Stanton before Leah contacted anyone else.

“That is what you intended,” Leah said. “Whether I felt unwanted was not important enough to change the plan.”

Margaret cried harder.

She spoke about marrying Robert and entering a house where Claire’s photographs remained everywhere. Evelyn compared her choices to Claire’s. Robert withdrew whenever grief was mentioned. Margaret began seeing Leah as the living reminder of a marriage she could never replace.

None of that was Leah’s fault.

Margaret knew it and acted otherwise.

She admitted sending the essay to Martin. She believed Julian needed one extraordinary application to enter the world expected of him. Leah, in Margaret’s mind, was resilient enough to succeed without family help.

It sounded almost like praise.

In practice, it meant taking from the child who complained least.

Leah did not offer immediate forgiveness.

She told Margaret that apology without changed behavior would become another performance. If Margaret wanted a relationship later, she would need to respect boundaries, cooperate with restitution and stop asking Leah to keep the family comfortable.

Margaret agreed.

Before leaving, she noticed Claire’s framed photograph on the desk.

For the first time, she apologized to the woman in the picture as well.
