Chapter 12 - Julian Without the Portal
Julian’s life had always been organized through portals someone else paid to open.
Private school enrollment.
Summer programs.
Internships arranged by foundation donors.
College consulting dashboards showing tasks completed by adults around him.
After Stanton revoked admission, the screens went quiet.
Robert could no longer use foundation money. Martin Shaw faced fraud charges and lost his consulting license. Margaret refused to write appeal letters after the audit interview.
Julian took a job at a warehouse because the court required him to begin restitution.
The first weeks were humiliating.
Coworkers did not care about his debate trophies or family name. When he arrived late, a supervisor documented it. When he damaged a scanner, the replacement cost came from his paycheck.
He blamed Leah privately.
Then he met Marcus Green, one of the students whose project had been taken from the foundation archive.
Marcus worked nights at the same warehouse while studying computer engineering.
Julian recognized his name from the spreadsheet.
He considered hiding.
Instead, he introduced himself.
Marcus did not forgive him. Julian had not personally used Marcus’s project, but he benefited from the system that did.
“Apologies are cheap when the person apologizing wants relief,” Marcus said. “What are you giving back?”
Julian began helping investigators identify consultant files and donor families. He turned over messages Robert had asked him to delete. He wrote to Stanton accepting responsibility without blaming his parents.
Months later, he sent Leah a copy before mailing it.
She returned one comment.
Remove the sentence saying you had no choice.
He removed it.
Julian eventually enrolled in a local community college. His first composition assignment earned an average grade. The professor wrote that the ideas were promising but underdeveloped.
No one rewrote it for him.
