The Keys on the White Table

Chapter 05 - The Keys on the White Table

The keys Leah placed on the table belonged to Robert’s sedan.

He had allowed her to use it for bookstore shifts, but only after tracking the vehicle through an app. Margaret often reminded Leah that the car could be taken away if her grades, attitude or gratitude disappointed them.

Returning the keys felt less like surrender than cutting a thin wire.

Robert picked them up.

“You cannot stay here while accusing us of crimes.”

“I did not accuse you,” Leah said. “Grandma’s records did.”

“This is my home.”

Arthur opened the deed registry on his tablet.

Carter House had never belonged to Robert. Evelyn purchased it after Claire’s death to ensure Leah would have stable housing. Robert paid utilities and maintenance but no mortgage.

The new trust permitted Robert, Margaret and Julian to remain temporarily, provided they did not intimidate Leah, destroy records or obstruct the audit.

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“So we need permission from a teenager to sleep in our own bedrooms?”

“No,” Arthur said. “You need to follow the conditions set by the owner who allowed you to live here.”

Julian accused Leah of planning the humiliation with Evelyn.

Leah looked at the packed suitcase.

“If I planned this, I would not have been ready to leave.”

That answer reached Robert in a way the documents had not.

For a moment, he saw the worn bag, the carefully folded clothes and the envelope Leah had held like the last proof she belonged anywhere.

Then pride returned.

He told Arthur the deed would be challenged. He said Evelyn had been ill, manipulated and confused.

Arthur had anticipated the claim.

Two physicians had certified Evelyn’s capacity. A retired judge witnessed the trust. Video recordings documented her explanations. Every document had been filed before her final hospitalization.

The challenge could proceed.

The house would remain protected during litigation.

Leah carried her suitcase back toward the hallway. Margaret asked where she thought she was going.

“To my room.”

“That room is being converted into storage.”

Leah stopped.

The boxes around her contained items Margaret had already removed from the small bedroom: books, school awards, Claire’s photographs and a lamp Evelyn gave her.

They had packed Leah’s life before telling her she was accused.

Arthur looked at Margaret.

“Put everything back.”

Leah shook her head.

“No. I will do it.”

She wanted to choose where each object belonged.

For the first time, the arrangement of her room would not be another favor granted by someone waiting to revoke it.
