Chapter 19 - Julian’s Original Essay
Four years after the Stanton hearing, Julian applied to transfer from community college to a state university.
The application required a personal essay.
He wrote about plagiarism.
The first draft centered on losing Stanton, public embarrassment and family pressure. His professor told him the essay still treated consequences as the main tragedy.
Julian started again.
He described the moment he found Leah’s printed research. He knew it was better than anything he had written. Instead of asking for help, he felt entitled to the result because the family had trained him to see Leah’s work as available.
He wrote about every smaller choice afterward: copying the file, accepting Martin’s edits, allowing Margaret to defend him and accusing Leah when the portal changed.
The final essay did not ask the reader to admire his growth.
It documented responsibility.
Before submitting it, Julian sent Leah a copy.
She read it once.
“This is yours,” she replied.
He was accepted without a major scholarship. He worked part-time and borrowed modestly.
At graduation, Leah attended but sat several rows behind Margaret and Robert. They did not pose as a perfectly repaired family.
Julian found her afterward.
He thanked her for coming.
“I did not come to prove everything is fixed,” she said.
“I know.”
That knowledge mattered.
Their relationship remained cautious. They exchanged messages about books and occasionally disagreed. Julian volunteered at Open Door workshops only under staff supervision and never reviewed applicant essays privately.
