The Stanton portal had first displayed good news for Julian.
He received an early admission offer and was listed as a finalist for the Founders Scholarship. Robert opened champagne. Margaret posted photographs before the official announcement.
Leah’s application remained under review.
Three days later, the scholarship committee contacted her.
They had detected extensive overlap between her essay and Julian’s. Because Julian submitted first, the automated system initially flagged Leah as the possible plagiarist.
Leah sent her drafts, research interviews, metadata and bookstore schedule showing when she wrote each section. She also submitted a recorded presentation delivered at school six months before Julian’s application existed.
The committee opened an investigation.
Leah told no one except Evelyn’s attorney, Arthur Bell.
She hoped the university might quietly remove the copied sections and judge both applications fairly. Arthur warned her that institutions could not ignore deliberate academic fraud.
Julian was asked to provide drafts.
He submitted files created two days before the deadline.
Then someone entered Leah’s cloud account and deleted several folders.
The recovery log showed the access came from Carter House.
Leah changed the password and sent the log to Stanton.
That morning, Julian’s scholarship was revoked. His admission was placed under review. The committee offered the scholarship to Leah after confirming she was the original author.
Julian discovered the result while the family was preparing to celebrate him.
He did not tell them about the investigation.
He said Leah had hacked the portal and replaced his name with hers.
Robert called Stanton and threatened legal action. The university emailed the formal explanation he was holding when Margaret ordered Leah to pack.
The letter did not accuse Leah.
It stated that Julian’s submission contained work created by another applicant and that digital evidence supported disciplinary review.
Robert read only the lines that damaged his son.
Julian displayed the portal because he believed visible shock would make his story feel true. He expected Leah to become emotional, allowing Margaret to call her jealous and unstable.
Instead, Leah asked one question.
“Show them the upload history.”
Julian refused.
Now, with Arthur Bell standing inside the house, the laptop remained open on the table.
Arthur turned it toward himself and examined the account menu.
A red notification appeared at the top:
ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED — AUTHORSHIP HEARING SCHEDULED.
Julian reached for the computer.
Arthur closed it first.
“This device may contain evidence involving a scholarship funded partly through the Carter Foundation,” he said. “It cannot leave until the trustees make a forensic copy.”
Robert objected.
Arthur looked at the suitcase beside Leah.
“You were prepared to remove one beneficiary from a trust-funded residence on the basis of an accusation you had not investigated.”

“What else were you preparing to remove?”
