The Dean’s Question

Chapter 08 - The Dean’s Question

Stanton University held Julian’s authorship hearing in a paneled conference room.

He arrived with Robert, Margaret and two attorneys. Leah came with Arthur and a student advocate.

The committee asked Julian how he developed the research topic.

He said he became interested after reading about rural hospital closures.

Which reports had he used?

He named two national studies.

The essay cited five local interviews not included in either report.

Who conducted them?

Julian said the consultant did.

Martin Shaw had already testified that all interview notes came from the Carter household printer file.

The committee played Leah’s school presentation. Her voice described riding a bus with Mrs. Delgado to the nearest clinic after their town’s facility closed. The same image appeared in Julian’s essay, changed from a grandmother to an elderly neighbor.

Julian’s confidence collapsed.

His attorney requested a private settlement.

The university refused.

Then the dean asked a simpler question.

“When did you first understand that the work was Leah’s?”

Julian looked toward his parents.

Margaret lowered her eyes.

Robert gave no signal.

Julian said, “Before I submitted it.”

The admission ended the central dispute.

He explained that Margaret and Martin told him applications were collaborative and that family stories belonged to the family. He knew the wording was wrong but believed Leah would never be considered for the same scholarship.

That sentence revealed the assumption beneath everything.

Leah’s work was useful only because they did not expect her to reach the room where it mattered.

Stanton revoked Julian’s admission for the coming year. He could reapply after completing an academic-integrity program and submitting original work without private consulting.

The decision was severe but not permanent.

Outside, Robert accused Leah of destroying her brother’s future.

The dean overheard.

“Mr. Carter, your son’s future has been delayed by his conduct. Your daughter did not create that conduct by documenting it.”

Leah expected satisfaction.

Instead, she felt exhausted.

Julian sat alone on a bench holding the closed laptop. For years, the family had removed every consequence before he could learn from it.

Now the first real one had arrived in public.

Whether it became punishment alone or the beginning of change was no longer Leah’s responsibility.
