Chapter 02 - The Girl Everyone Owed a Favor

Leah’s mother, Claire, had been Robert Carter’s first wife.

Claire died after a sudden illness when Leah was eleven. Robert remarried Margaret less than a year later and moved Leah into Carter House, the large suburban home owned by Evelyn.

At first, Margaret promised that Leah would never feel different from Julian.

The promise lasted until no visitors were present.

Julian received the upstairs room with a private bathroom because he was older. Leah slept beside the laundry room because Margaret said grief made her restless. Julian attended expensive camps. Leah was told to be grateful for public school.

Whenever Leah complained, Robert reminded her that Margaret had “taken on another woman’s child.”

Evelyn hated that phrase.

“Parents do not take on children,” she said. “They either care for them or fail them.”

Evelyn lived in the small guest cottage behind the house. As her health declined, Leah cooked for her, organized medication and listened to stories about the family’s education foundation.

The Carter Foundation had been created by Evelyn’s late husband to fund university scholarships for students who lacked family money. Over time, Robert became its treasurer and slowly transformed it into a private advantage for Julian.

Foundation money paid for Julian’s test tutors, travel programs and college consultant. Robert described the expenses as youth outreach.

Leah received nothing.

She worked evenings at a bookstore and saved for application fees. Her strongest project examined how small towns lost medical services when private investors purchased local clinics. Evelyn helped her find old foundation reports but never wrote a sentence for her.

The paper became Leah’s Stanton scholarship essay.

One afternoon, she printed a draft in the home office and forgot to collect it.

Julian found it.

Two weeks later, Leah saw several paragraphs on his screen. He claimed he was using the structure as inspiration. Margaret dismissed the similarity.

“Julian has always been interested in healthcare policy,” she said.

He had not.

Leah saved every draft, revision and research note inside a cloud folder Evelyn had advised her to create. She did not know those timestamps would later protect her.

Evelyn understood before Leah did.

She reviewed the foundation’s accounts, discovered Robert’s spending and changed the house trust.

“You are not receiving this because I love you more,” she told Leah. “You are receiving responsibility because you understand that a house and an education are doors, not trophies.”

Leah begged her to speak with Robert.

Evelyn shook her head.
