Chapter 10 - Rosa’s Choice
Rosa received offers from news networks, publishers, and attorneys.
Some promised enough money to buy a house if she described every detail of the abuse. Others wanted her to sue the Mercer family publicly.
She declined most of them.
“I do not want my worst day edited into entertainment,” she said.
But Rosa did file a civil case against Claire for threats, retaliation, and emotional harm. She also named the private employment agency that had ignored her complaints.
Daniel offered to pay her legal fees.
Rosa hesitated.
“I do not want anyone saying I work for you now.”
“You do not.”
“Then put the money into a legal fund for domestic workers, and let an independent board control it.”
Daniel agreed.
The fund became the first project connected to Hawthorne House.
Evelyn asked Rosa to become its worker representative.
Rosa accepted only after insisting that caregivers and housekeepers receive voting power equal to donors.
One afternoon, Daniel found Rosa packing her belongings at the mansion.
“You are leaving?”
“I cannot sleep here.”
He understood.
The marble floor, the blue chair, and the hidden office belonged to evidence now. They could not immediately become home again.
Rosa moved into an apartment near her sister.
Before leaving, she handed Daniel a key.
“I found this sewn inside your mother’s robe.”
It opened a small safe in Evelyn’s former bedroom.
Inside were photographs Claire had not destroyed, including one of Daniel, Evelyn, and Claire taken on their wedding day.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
I hope she will one day understand that joining a family is not the same as conquering it.
Daniel stared at the smiling bride in the photograph.
He remembered Claire helping Evelyn down the church steps, dancing with her, and calling her Mom.
Had those moments been false?
Perhaps not.
People rarely became cruel in a single instant. Claire may once have wanted love before resentment, entitlement, and fear of losing wealth became stronger.
Understanding that complexity did not reduce her responsibility.
Daniel placed the photograph in the evidence box.
