The Smear Campaign

Chapter 07 - The Smear Campaign
Claire’s arrest lasted less than a day.
Her attorneys secured bail and immediately launched a public campaign.
They released selected medical records suggesting Evelyn had cognitive decline. They portrayed Daniel as an absent husband who returned from overseas, misunderstood a caregiving emergency, and attacked a devoted wife.
Anonymous accounts accused Rosa of creating the video to extort the Mercer family.
One edited clip showed Evelyn swinging the cane toward Claire, omitting the minutes before and after.
Television commentators debated whether Claire had been defending herself.
Daniel’s company placed him on administrative leave because his forged signature appeared on suspicious transfers.
Northbridge Development sued the Mercer trust for breach of contract.
For forty-eight hours, it seemed Claire might bury the truth beneath enough confusion.
Then Evelyn asked to speak publicly.
Her doctor warned that she was still weak.
“I have been weak in private long enough,” she said.
Evelyn entered the press room in a wheelchair with Daniel beside her and Rosa standing behind them.
She did not describe every assault.
She read one of the letters Claire had hidden.
Dear Daniel,
If I appear confused when we speak, please understand that I am afraid. Claire controls the phone. She says you no longer want me. I do not believe her, but some nights the medicine makes belief difficult.
When Evelyn finished, the room was silent.
She looked into the cameras.
“Old age does not make a person dishonest. Dependence does not remove dignity. A beautiful home can contain abuse as easily as any other house.”
Rosa spoke next.
“I did not record Mrs. Mercer for money. I recorded because powerful people often ask workers for proof after ignoring our words.”
Detective Ortiz released an authenticated section of the unedited footage with Evelyn’s consent.
Public opinion shifted overnight.
Claire responded by accusing Daniel of adultery during his time abroad.
She produced photographs of him dining with a female engineer.
The engineer, Amina Haddad, publicly explained that the dinner included twelve project managers and had been cropped to show only two people.
She also revealed that Claire had contacted her weeks earlier offering money for a false statement.
The offer was preserved in writing.
Claire’s attempt to discredit Daniel became new evidence of witness manipulation.
