Chapter 12 - The Trial Begins
Claire’s trial opened fourteen months after Daniel came home.
Prosecutors charged her with attempted murder, aggravated elder abuse, financial exploitation, fraud, forgery, unlawful imprisonment, and witness intimidation.
The defense described her as a burned-out caregiver trapped between an absent husband and a demanding mother-in-law.
They called experts who testified that caregiving stress could cause emotional breakdowns.
The prosecutor asked one question.
“Does stress cause someone to create shell companies six months before the patient enters the home?”
The expert could not answer.
Rosa testified about the first assault she witnessed. Claire’s attorney questioned why she continued working if the house was so dangerous.
“Because leaving meant Mrs. Mercer would be alone,” Rosa said.
“You also expected financial compensation.”
“I expected wages.”
The courtroom grew quiet.
Evelyn testified from a chair beside the witness stand. She described Claire hiding the phone, withholding food, and forcing her hand toward legal documents.
The defense suggested medication had affected her memory.
Prosecutors played the recordings.
Claire’s own voice confirmed every important detail.
Daniel testified last.
His wife watched him with the expression she once used when expecting him to solve a problem.
The defense attorney asked whether he had neglected Claire emotionally by working abroad.
“Yes,” Daniel said.
The attorney seemed surprised.
“Would you agree that Mrs. Mercer placed extraordinary pressure on your wife?”
“Yes.”
“Then you accept responsibility for the conflict?”
“I accept responsibility for being absent and inattentive. I do not accept responsibility for Claire choosing fraud and violence.”
The attorney displayed the cropped photograph of Daniel and Amina.
“Were you faithful?”
“Yes.”
Claire laughed from the defense table.
The prosecutor then introduced Claire’s written offer to Amina requesting false testimony.
The laugh stopped.
Finally, the jury watched the unedited salon video.
On the screen, Claire raised the cane.
Then the doors opened and Daniel entered.
In court, no one moved.
The video ended with Evelyn saying:
She said you would never believe me.
Daniel looked toward his mother.
“I believe you,” he said.

The judge ordered the words removed from the record.
But everyone had heard them.
