Chapter 09 - The Promise Daniel’s Father Made
Hawthorne House had been built by Daniel’s grandfather after returning from war.
The surrounding property included thirty acres overlooking the water. Daniel’s father, Thomas Mercer, used the house as a recovery space after a construction accident left him unable to walk for nearly a year.
Before his death, Thomas made Evelyn promise that the land would one day serve injured workers and elderly people who could not afford rehabilitation.
Claire called the promise sentimental.
Daniel had sometimes agreed.
The Northbridge offer could have made the family wealthier than ever. Before leaving for Saudi Arabia, he argued with Evelyn about refusing it.
Now he visited Hawthorne House alone.
Dust covered the furniture. His father’s workshop remained untouched. On the wall hung architectural sketches for a nonprofit rehabilitation center that Thomas never lived to build.
Daniel found a letter addressed to him inside the desk.
Evelyn had placed it there years earlier.

There will always be someone who can explain why money matters more than a promise. The difficult part is remembering who you become each time you agree.
Daniel sat in the empty workshop until sunset.
He realized Claire had not invented his willingness to prioritize profit. She had studied it and assumed he would eventually support the sale if she completed the hard part.
The difference between them was not that Daniel had always been good.
It was that he still had the chance to change.
He met Evelyn at the hospital the next morning.
“I am sorry I pressured you to sell.”
Evelyn touched his hand.
“You did not hurt me because we disagreed.”
“No. But I made Claire believe the promise could be negotiated.”
“Claire believed people could be negotiated.”
Daniel showed her the old architectural plans.
“I want to build it.”
Evelyn smiled for the first time since his return.
They petitioned the court to convert Hawthorne House and the recovered Northbridge funds into the Thomas Mercer Rehabilitation Trust.
Claire’s attorneys objected, arguing Daniel was disposing of marital assets before trial.
The judge ruled that the property had always belonged to Evelyn’s protected trust.
Claire had no legal claim.
When the decision was announced, she stared at Daniel across the courtroom.
“You would give away forty million dollars just to punish me?”
