Chapter 04 - The Housekeeper’s Secret Recording
Rosa had hidden something from the police.
When she returned to the hospital, she carried a small red sewing box. Inside, beneath spools of thread, was a memory card wrapped in tissue.
“I bought a camera after the first time I saw Mrs. Mercer bleeding,” she said.
Rosa had placed the device inside a decorative clock on the salon shelf. It recorded only when it detected movement.
The first clip showed Claire taking Evelyn’s phone.
The second showed Mason laying papers on the table while Claire guided Evelyn’s unsteady hand toward a tablet.
The third lasted eleven minutes.
Evelyn sat in the blue armchair, asking for Daniel. Claire paced in front of her.
“He is not coming home,” Claire said. “He has another life now.”
“That is not true.”
“Then why has he not answered you?”
“Because you hide my phone.”
Claire leaned close. “Sign the property transfer and I will let you speak to him.”
Evelyn refused.
Claire slapped her.
Daniel paused the video.
For several seconds, no one in the hospital room spoke.
He resumed.
Rosa entered and stepped between them. Claire threatened to report her, lifted Evelyn’s cane, and struck it against the arm of the chair inches from the elderly woman’s hand.
The final recording began on the morning Daniel returned.
It captured Claire forcing Evelyn to the floor, ordering her to sign, and raising the cane.
Then Daniel appeared in the doorway.
The entire confrontation had been recorded.
Detective Lena Ortiz copied the files immediately.
“This changes the case,” she said.
Rosa looked relieved but afraid.
“Mason knows where my sister lives.”
The police arranged protection.
Daniel watched the final clip again. His own face entered the frame at the exact moment Claire believed she had complete control.
He had spent months feeling guilty for missing holidays and leaving his family behind.
Now he understood that his absence had not created Claire’s cruelty.
It had only removed the witness she feared.
Detective Ortiz asked for access to Daniel’s financial records.
He agreed.
Within hours, investigators found that more than three million dollars had moved from Mercer accounts into consulting companies associated with Mason.
Claire had approved every transfer.
The largest payment had occurred two weeks earlier.
Its description read:
HAWTHORNE ACQUISITION ADVANCE.

And the buyer expected the transfer to be completed within forty-eight hours.
