Claire’s Explanation

Chapter 02 - Claire’s Explanation
The ambulance arrived within ten minutes.
Claire tried to follow Evelyn outside, but Daniel blocked the doorway.
“You are not going near her.”
“This is my house.”
“It belongs to my mother’s trust.”
Claire’s eyes flickered toward the papers in his hand.
Only for a second.
Daniel saw it.
Police officers separated everyone. Rosa gave her account in the kitchen, while Claire sat in the salon with an attorney already on speakerphone. She claimed Evelyn had become confused, attacked her during a discussion about medical care, and fallen while Claire tried to take away the cane.
Daniel listened from the hallway.
Claire’s version was calm, detailed, and almost convincing.
Then Rosa emerged, shaking.
“She has hurt Mrs. Mercer before,” she told Daniel.
“How many times?”
“I saw three. I heard more.”
Daniel felt sick. “Why didn’t you call me?”
“I tried.”
Rosa showed him her phone. Seven outgoing calls to Daniel’s overseas number had failed over the previous month. Her emails had been returned as undeliverable.
Claire controlled the family’s home network and managed Daniel’s personal correspondence while he was abroad.
“She said you changed your number,” Rosa continued. “She told me if I contacted the police, she would report me for theft and have my visa canceled.”
Rosa was a permanent resident, but Claire had convinced her otherwise.
Daniel looked back toward the salon.
Claire sat perfectly upright beneath the chandelier, one hand resting on the cane as if it were an ordinary household object.
At the hospital, doctors found Evelyn dehydrated, heavily sedated, and suffering from two cracked ribs in different stages of healing.
Claire’s attorney said the injuries could have come from falls.
The physician asked Daniel who administered Evelyn’s medication.
“My wife.”
A nurse handed him a plastic bag containing the pills found in Evelyn’s bedroom.
The prescription label belonged to a man who had died six months earlier.
Daniel called Claire.
“What have you been giving my mother?”
Claire exhaled slowly. “Medication to keep her calm.”
“It was not prescribed to her.”
“She refused proper treatment.”
“Who gave it to you?”
Silence.
Then Claire said, “Come home, Daniel. We can discuss this without strangers turning it into a crime.”
He looked through the glass wall at Evelyn sleeping beneath a hospital blanket.
“No,” he said. “We will discuss it with the police.”
Claire ended the call.

Five minutes later, the mansion’s security system went offline.
By the time officers returned with a warrant, the digital recording unit had disappeared.
