Chapter 05 - The Deal Behind Hawthorne House

The buyer was Northbridge Development, a corporation controlled through several shell companies.

At first, nothing connected it directly to Claire.

Then investigators found Mason’s name on an internal loan guarantee.

Northbridge had advanced twelve million dollars to Claire and Mason in exchange for the promise that Hawthorne House would be transferred before the end of the month. They had already spent much of it on failed investments, luxury properties, and gambling debts.

If the sale collapsed, Northbridge could expose them—or demand repayment they could not make.

Daniel confronted Claire at the police station, where she had arrived voluntarily with counsel.

“Did you borrow against my mother’s property?”

Claire crossed her arms. “I solved a family problem you were too absent to understand.”

“You drugged her.”

“She was impossible.”

“You hit her.”

“She provoked me.”

Daniel stared at her.

Until that moment, part of him had searched for illness, panic, or some hidden explanation that would allow the woman he loved to exist beneath the evidence.

Claire gave him none.

“Why did you marry me?” he asked.

Her expression tightened. “Do not become dramatic.”

“Was any of it real?”

“I gave you nine years. I hosted your clients, protected your reputation, managed your mother, and kept this house functioning while you chased projects around the world.”

“You say that as if it entitled you to everything.”

“It entitled me to more than being treated like hired staff.”

Daniel thought of Rosa kneeling beside Evelyn while Claire stood above them.

“You treated hired staff as less than human.”

Claire leaned forward.

“Your mother never accepted me. She controlled the trust, the company shares, and every decision. You let her.”

“She was protecting property my father left for public use.”

“She was protecting her power.”

“And you tried to take it with a cane.”

Claire’s attorney ended the interview.

Outside, Mason called Daniel from an unknown number.

“We can settle this,” he said. “Drop the abuse accusation, complete the sale, and everyone walks away.”

“My mother has broken ribs.”

“She is old. Juries understand falls.”

Daniel recorded the call.

Mason continued.

“You think Claire will go down alone? Your electronic signature is on the financial documents. The money moved through your company. If this becomes public, you lose everything.”

Daniel looked through the station window at Detective Ortiz.

“Then we will lose it in public.”

Mason disconnected.

An hour later, authorities issued warrants for both siblings.
